About Lake Talquin

Lake Talquin is located 10 miles west of Florida’s capital, Tallahassee. The lake was created by man in 1927 after the Jackson Bluff Dam was constructed on the Ochlockonee River.

The depths of Lake Talquin will range anywhere from 15 to 40 feet deep — offering plenty of room for a diverse range of wildlife to inhabit the lake.

Despite its impressive depths for a Florida lake, we do not recommend swimming in Lake Talquin due to the muddy shores and the wonderful alligators, turtles, and snakes that we share the water with.

Gaining access to the lake is pretty simple thanks to the 10 public boat ramps, 7 public fishing piers, and 6 fishing camps surrounding the lake.

How to Catch Fish in Lake Talquin

Fishing in Lake Talquin

Fishing at Lake Talquin is easy for everyone. You can fish from the over 70 miles of shoreline for shore fishing or you can do what we prefer — boat fishing.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission maintains the Striper population by manually stocking the lake. If you’re looking to catch yourself a Striper, to increase your chances, the best months to catch a Striper are February, March, and April.

In the colder months, you can still catch fish on the lake — just be sure to use diving lures or other deeper-water baits. When the water becomes colder, fish tend to hang around the bottom of the lake.

If you’re intending to go after a trophy Crappie — try trolling in the deep channels — around 20 feet deep. The summer months are going to be the most difficult months to catch crappie.

For bream, fish the shorelines, this strategy is especially effective during the hot summer months.

To catch your dream Largemouth Bass — we recommend using diving crankbaits that will help you catch the big bass in the deep channels.
